Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1966, Michael Gerard Tyson had a challenging childhood. As a young man, he had brushes with the law and was sent to a boys’ reform school in upstate New York, where he learned to box.

His mother died when he was a teenager, and he was raised by Cus D’Amato, a boxing manager and trainer. Tyson quit high school to devote himself fully to boxing and won gold medals at the Junior Olympic Games in 1981 and 1982.
